What a letdown

Being a huge Zombie fan, when i heard about this movie, i was excited. In this day and age it is so hard to come across an original idea when it pertains to the zombie genre, and this one definitely had an original idea.

I have to say that i was sadly let down. I wish i could get back the hour and a half of my life i wasted watching this sad excuse for a zombie movie...

Now i understand that Indy films usually don't have the flair or expensive effects, but what they usually have it actors making the best of what they have, this was not one of those cases.

The character's were tragically cliché' to the point of being an embarrassment. I honestly wonder if the writer simply wrote this movie to perpetuate his idea of what he thinks is "cool". I could not tell if the characters were so horrible because the writing was so terrible, or because the actors were terrible, but after awhile i came to the conclusion that it is both...

Even the sex scene (which is usually the staple in indy movies that draws people to watch) left me wanting to switch the channel to public access telethons. I've seen much better acting in porn movies. it seemed at times as if the cast had been held at gunpoint and forced to read their lines...

The endless dragging on of nunchuk swinging, head bashing, and pummeling lended to the fact that this zombie movie could not even stay on track with any zombie traditions... A zombie is simply not going to sit on your lap and gently punch your chest for 10 minutes, without trying to bite you, nor would someone with a zombie sitting on their laps just sit there not defending themselves and just call for help.

I could continue to elaborate on the many flaws both in the script, actors, and acting, but much like this movie, it would simply be a waste of your time...

I hope that another Indy group takes a stab at this idea and shows this cast/crew how a good zombie movie can be made.

P.S. and seriously you guys are charging $20 plus $8 shipping for this crap???

Excellent

This was an excellent movie. The theme, story line, dialog and actors/actresses were great. I think all families should see this movie. Especially if there are misunderstandings or conflicts within the family. This movie brings home the message that family should stick by each other and be faithful to each other. It sends the message that families should resolve their differences and not let them linger and fester. This movie also shows that the truth should always prevail among family members. Reunion strongly portrays family values, love and forgiveness.It mirrors real life. That is, things will not always be calm and peaceful but love and family values conquers all. This movie also shows the value of a true dedicated and committed matriarch. The writer, producer and actors are all to be commended.

What?

The people who wrote all the previous reviews must be trying to sell the movie, because I don't see how any of them could have got what they say they got out of the movie. It is boring from start to finish and the characters are flaky and uninteresting! There's really no plot other than that they are making a documentary. Some elements they bring up in the film are so vague it makes you wonder why they put them in the film in the first place. It makes me think if the Lifetime channel made a zombie movie, this is what it would be. If you are a true zombie movie fan, then this movie isn't for you! Trust me, you'll be more entertained sitting in front of your TV for an hour and a half with it turned off!

Don't get the wrong impression- 'AJ' is the greatest.

Don't let the fact that 'AJ Goes to France's' comedy may be reminiscent of the greats mentioned in reviews of the film fool you; the script and all of its jokes are most definitely original (and hilarious). Starring AJ Thompson (as himself), Danny Davy (the French guy, himself), Toby Jones (George Sampson III, himself), Ben Hanson (Jean Patrick Francois deLayfayette), Heidi Gustad (Gretchen Walla), Tom "Zero" Seim (angry mime), and Cody Koch (Sabin), 'AJ Goes to France' is a wonderous work created by high schoolers. Honestly, you would never guess that we made this the summer immediately following senior year. "Mad props" to Toby Jones, Danny Davy, and AJ Thomson for co-writing and directing such an amazing full-length debut. If you are a fan of the comedy trio Stella (Michael Showalter, David Wain, Michael Ian Black), you will love 'AJ.'

Well acted but inorganic

A Spanish tragicomedy about the declining life of a second-rate theater actor, superbly performed by iconic Spanish actor Juan Diego.

The film tells the story of Santiago -an alcoholic actor in personal and professional crisis- who lives with his much younger girlfriend Ana, and is visited by his estranged son Guillermo. The movie depicts the life crisis of many old actors whose small and independent theater companies have been disappearing, or their age turned them from leading actor to nobody.

Juan Diego is splendid in this character, which he plays with conviction, honesty, rawness and credibility, perhaps because he knows well the sort of actor he's playing as he's been acting since he was a teen. Most of the supporting actors are also supporting characters, that is, their stories are there to offer a 360 degree human view of Santiago. Thus, the character of Ana -nicely played by Cristina Plazas- is there to bring out the macho selfish and emotional cruelty of Santiago as a person. The character of Santiago's son Guillermo -very well played by Botto- is there, on the contrary, to bring out Santiago's weakness and vulnerability. However, Guillermo's character takes a life of its own in the movie, and he's really intriguing and ambiguous, and keeps the viewer wondering if he's what he says he is.

The main problem with the movie is the connection of the characters between themselves, which I found not organic enough. The story, on the other hand, seems not to go anywhere, and all the fantastic work of the actors is somewhat wasted. In fact, the end is not open nor close, as if the director had stopped filming almost at the end and never got back to ending the movie. Moreover, there are too many dialogs and deep monologues, that are a bit pretentious and not interesting enough, which can tire the viewer too.

Both Diego and Botto won a Goya and the Spanish Actor Union's Award for their respective performances, while Diego also won the prize to the best leading actor at the San Sebastian Film Festival that same year.

A Nutshell Review: If You Love Me Follow Me

We probably have the wildest of dreams during our youths, where the skies the limit and enthusiasm knows no bounds. Full of boundless energy and a daring to try out the unknown, a society like ours gets us all pragmatic and in living up to expectations of the elders, where success equates to getting a well paid job which comes from a set of good academic papers to show for. If we've achieved all those and gone through a soulless period, what happens if we get seduced again with Maslow's hierarchy of needs, and seek self-actualization by revisiting those youthful dreams again?

For Max (Mathieu Demy), he becomes the head of a hospital at the age of 33, a feat he gets congratulated for by friends and family in the opening of the movie, with his parents beaming with pride. But we soon find out that he's unhappy, despite having a job many would kill for, and a beautiful wife Praline (Julie Depardieu) at his side. He's burnt out, and no longer finds saving lives a joy, but a chore, down to a point where he flares up at an uncooperative patient.

In a drinking spree, he notices a bar singer Chine (Eleonore Pourriat) and watching her do her gig, it revived some memories of a rock band he used to front. Getting all excited, he recruits Chine into his band, and calls up ex band members in Felipe the drummer (Fabio Zenoni) and Apache the bassist (Warren Zavatta) and sets up frequent jamming sessions at the cellar of his long time friend Anna (Romane Bohringer) who actually after all these years, is still holding a torch for him.

Co-written and directed by Benoit Cohen, this film tried to examine the price of sacrifice, and actually touches on a real subject that I believe many working adults would have asked themselves at one point or another - what am I doing here, and what's my purpose in life? Being in a rat race, it's relatively easy to recognize our fantasy of walking away from a regular job in pursuit of a lifelong dream, but how many of us actually have the courage to step away from our comfort zone, and battle it out in a new environment of opportunity?

And that of support too, which is important, as many a times we have those who depend on us to bring home the dough, and that the pursuit of dreams could put those arrangements into disarray. In Max's case, he engages his colleague Jojo (Mathias Miekuz) to cover for him and hide his intent from his wife, because he understands how it would upset her, though there's an entire backstory that works on this aspect as well.

Besides the marital strength between Max and Praline being tested, there were other minor developments amongst the other supporting characters that come into play, especially during the retreat all of them had, with new relationships being forged and revealed, some for the better, others just being a spanner thrown in to mix things up a little. But it is still that between Max and Praline that questioned again, the reality of a marriage, whether you really know what you're in for, or are you hooked onto the illusion of someone who doesn't exist, or worse, being together only because of convenience, or gratitude.

Despite being labelled a comedy, this movie is anything but that with some real nagging issues constantly provoking your mind. There were some light comedy though, but some which I felt were somewhat lost in translation. The music on the other hand, was a joy to sit through and listen to, and just right up my alley with its rocking, edgy sound.

I was there.

I will catch this film when it plays here in Chicago in August. I was in Kommune 1 for a couple of weeks in March of 1969. There were two residences - Rainer Langhans, Uschi Obermaier, Dieter Kunzelmann stayed in the larger of the two, a factory loft sort of place. I stayed in the other residence, a dozen or so people in one large room. I went there with a friend from Frankfurt who wanted to reconcile with his girlfriend, who had left him for Dieter Kunzelmann. His girlfriend was unreceptive and he split right away. I was welcome to stay on for a while and did. It was easy living. Everyone was nice, except grouchy Dieter. No star attitudes or pretensions. Both Rainer and Uschi were very grounded, not at all affected by their notoriety. I think that set the tone. I'll give this film a 10 just on its subject matter.

Romantic Comedy With Steez

The thing that struck me about this movie the most was how real the dialogue and landscape felt to me. I grew up in the Bay and all of the scenes really evoked a feeling of being in the bay. I felt like this movie tackled the angst of being a young person trying to figure out what love is amidst our unpredictable world, while at the same time trying to find our ways within it all. The cool thing is, Korde and his cast did this in a way that was humorous and not preachy at all. I laughed out loud many times and even had my eyes well up a bit at scenes that i related to my own life. The soundtrack is awesome. The actors did a great job! I really enjoyed this film. Funny, romantic, heartfelt, hip.

Eisner could have been right with this crap on a stick

This was possibly the worst movie I have ever seen. It makes dukes of hazards look like Gone With The Wind.

The only time I laughed at the movie was from relief, when it ended. The jokes in the movie were horrible. For example, when skeletons came out of the ground they said "Pirates of the Carribian." Thats it. WHAT? This movie was released by the weinstien brothers who were the head of mirimax. Michael Eisner fired them a few years ago, I am starting to think that this was a good idea, because even Eisner would not release stink like this.

Also, the dubbing was horrible. There was a moose in the movie, whose mouth did not move, but he still spoke. Don't see this movie, it sucks.
