So terrible I almost couldn't turn it off....almost

This movie is simply dismal. The script is among the worst I've ever seen brought even to home video. Just about every scene is an awkward, poorly set up contrivance, the jokes are howlers. And once again we have actors overdoing the stereotype of an Italian-American accent by using a New York accent...in a movie that takes place in Boston.

Everything about this movie was bad, the conversations between the Italian and Italian-American characters being the very worst of it. Not five seconds goes by without a cliché, which almost becomes comforting in its predictability.

For a while I watched this movie just to see if it was as dismal as it seemed when I first tuned in. It was. I went against my rule of always watching movies through to the end, but ended up turning it off. I have no idea how it even ends, and I don't even care.

Light hearted indie-film

If you like Aaron Eckhart then you'll like this film. It's a departure from anything he's done in the past. Elizabeth Banks plays his wife, a beautiful, self obsessed, spoiled, rich bitch with no redeeming qualities except her looks and body. (It's VERY much the same role as she played in "The Baxter". She's really got this character type down and is carving a niche for herself in indie films.)

As I watched this movie, I thought that it reminded me of those indie films that I loved from the late 90's and early 2000's and how they just don't make them like this anymore. I didn't laugh all the way through this movie, but there were places where I chuckled (considerably) and I did have a smirk on my face for a good bit of the movie. (Think "The Ex" but not as funny.)

It a great Friday night, too tired to think, order a pizza and veg movie. And if you like indie films from a decade ago, then you'll be glad you rented this one.

An update on "American Graffiti"

Remember the Daze is an authentic look at high school students on the brink of graduation. It reveals the trepidations and excitement that students feel at this very important juncture in their life. The middle class life style will connect to a large segment of the population, but some will see it as how the "rich" live, especially because they all seem to be driving cars. However, the class distinctions are minor in the film much as they were in "American Graffiti." One of the biggest differences in "Graffiti" was that the most daring thing a kid could do then was to get an adult to buy whiskey for him in a liquor store. Some parents may be shocked and horrified to see the promiscuous use of mind altering drugs. On the other hand, it might be healthy for them to get an authentic look at what's going on.

Funny, original story with some great scenes

I saw this at the Waterfront Film Festival in Saugatuck, Michigan.

Tracy Orbinson (Hubbel Palmer) is an overweight grocery store worker who has dreams of becoming an actor. He takes acting classes and is greatly impressed by his acting teacher Truman Hope (William Baldwin). Along the way he befriends a group of teenagers and tries to reform them from their rowdy ways. The film is filled with a lot of entertaining scenes and funny moments, it's a good and fun movie.

I loved the first half of the movie, it was very funny ad great to watch. But I felt it lost some of its wit and comedy when the teenagers and Hubbel concocted a plan regarding the grocery store, and the film never really recovered after it. It still had some charm in the second half, but it started to become a comedy/drama, and I would have preferred the film to be a consistent comedy.

Directed by Chris Bowman and written and starring Hubble Palmer, it's a worthy effort. The first half is great, and the ending also has the same flare as the beginning of the film. Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, actress Mary Lynn Rajskub, and producer Jeremy Coon were at the film festival and had some funny stories to tell about the making of the film. They were a nice group of people and obviously had a great time making the film.

Probably one of the worst movies ever made.

After what would appear to be a promising start,( first ten minutes) this mishap falls miserably down on its face and never recovers. You would have thought somewhere in the whole production process, someone, anyone would have stood up and said, " this whole thing just sucks-lets stop wasting our money ." The production people should be ashamed, the actors should be ashamed, and the viewer should be insulted that this garbage is being cranked out. There should be some sort of class-action lawsuit filed against the studio, seeking damages to the public for this crap. Absolutely inexcusable, in that a Country so great as ours, with all our resources, that this waste would be allowed. I, and others in a line with me, demanded our money back at the theater. Think " Are We There Yet ? " with a bunch of fake snow. Worthless.

excellent low budget movie

I watched this movie last night not knowing what to expect and have to say this was one of the funniest slasher movies I have seen for a long time. I think You need to watch this movie twice or more to appreciate the subtlety in the humour. camp? yes, a good helping of gore, and some excellent larger than life characters. Boris and Yuri had potential as the new morecambe and wise of horror. I don't know what the other people commenting were expecting (or indeed watching) but my wife and I laughed throughout. A great deadpan performance form stephen dorff and the beautiful Jaime Murray. Take a chance and see this movie. All in all a great watch and a lot of fun.

What a trip full of emotions was to see this film....it's passed a half hour since i finished the movie, and let me tell you something, i still feel my heart overweight...the story is simple, a playboy fall in love for the first time with a patient of a hospital.I don't wanna spoil anything, cause it will rest the impact of the film. I recommend this film to be watch with your boy/girlfriend, and it has a lot of comedy in the first half, so it will be entertainment even for the ones who don't fall to much for romance films. The music its outstanding too, and i have seen a lot of Korean romance-comedy-dramas, and let me tell you , this film will move you like anything you have seen before.

Good action, weak comedy

UNDERCOVER HIDDEN DRAGON begins promisingly enough with down-on-his-luck delivery boy Fat (pop star/comedian Ronald Cheng) being recruited by a band of thugs. While Fat doesn't show a lot of street smarts, he's nevertheless willing to lead a one-man charge against his recruiters' enemies, a rival gang that looks like it could use a visit to the Hair Club for Men. Fat's attack ends predictably with his fleeing from the band of baldies, but then the action shifts into high gear when a raincoat-wearing fighter (Philip Ng) shows up to demolish the follically challenged foes. This fight sequence and its encore that occurs two-thirds of the way through the movie are easily the best scenes in the film and truly deserved to be a part of a much better movie.

The remainder of this taxing time-waster sees Fat being approached by the world's skinniest cops (Theresa Fu, Miki Yeung, and Ella Koon) and told that he is actually an undercover police officer who has suffered amnesia and is living out an assumed identity. While Fat is not wholly convinced, he is willing, for a price, to help the policewomen get information on mob boss Wind To (also played by Ronald Cheng) and take him down. When he gets TOO close to Wind and is promoted to a lieutenant and personal bodyguard to Sharon (model Pace Wu), the boss's wife, Fat's friends try to lead him back to the path of justice and righteousness, encouraging him to be a hero. This, unfortunately, leads to an interminable sequence where Fat and his good buddy (played by Lam Chi Chung of SHAOLIN SOCCER and KUNG FU HUSTLE fame) fight crime as the Chinese Kamen Riders.

If you think the plot sounds like a confusing mess, then that would just prove you are perfectly normal because the script for UNDERCOVER HIDDEN DRAGON is in serious need of editing if not a major rewrite. Ronald Cheng is his normal just-short-of-over-the-top self and tries hard to get laughs, such as in an early scene where Fat answers a call using what little English he knows--for no apparent reason.

Unfortunately, directors Dante Lam and Gordon Chan, who gave us the brilliant BEAST COPS in 1998, do not seem to understand Cheng's approach to comedy and saddle him with lame gags like having him deny groping the chests of the lady cops in the back of a van when he's the only male in sight. They also include a love triangle where Fat has been pining for Sharon long before she became Wind's wife but has also developed feelings for Chong Ching (Fu). While this subplot does not feel entirely out of place (it figures prominently in the climax), it unfortunately ends a little too neatly and rather unbelievably (just ask my wife--women do NOT act the way Wu would in her position). The directors also include go-nowhere story lines about Fat working at an arcade and the bald gang engaging in drug trafficking, seemingly for the sake of including a musical number involving some ridiculous afros--I wish I were kidding--and some serious hand-to-hand combat. In other words, Lam and Chan seem to be throwing to the wall everything not nailed down in hopes that some of it will stick. Some of it does, like the impressive fight sequences involving the baldies, but most of it doesn't and is just forgettable material that has been recycled dozens of times over (good guy looking like the bad guy, anyone?).

Overall, this is a largely unfunny and disposable film that will hopefully serve as a stepping stone for bigger and better things for all those involved. Ronald Cheng has shown that he can be funny given the right material and, with any luck, he will put this movie behind him and find his form again. The top-notch fights in UNDERCOVER HIDDEN DRAGON--which are not quite good enough to justify anyone sitting through the rest of the film just to see them--prove that Lam and Chan still know how to direct and entertain. If they can recover and build on those scenes then fans will probably have a solid action picture to look forward to in the (hopefully) not-too-distant future.

Poorly made nudie from Nick, way out-of-date even when released

As he admits in the interview on the DVD release, THE EROTIC MR. ROSE was made by Nick Millard as an imitation of Russ Meyer's breakthrough hit THE IMMORAL MR. TEAS. Why it took him 5 years to come up with this desultory knockoff is a mystery, but its poor quality is typical of Nick's work.

Using the pseudonym "Philip Miller", and with his dad as associate producer, Nick apparently thought that random black & white footage of comic Hermie Rose acting silly could be appended to several color "solo" peep show loops of beautiful women, and the resulting package serve as suitable filler at adult theaters and burlesque houses of 1964. "No Refunds" posted at the door was a mandatory warning due to the existence of junk like this.

The formula of shooting MOS, adding jazz background music, plus an annoying voice-over narrator, served Nick's purpose for dozens of pseudo films for over a decade, even though his previous film, NUDES ON CREDIT, actually had acting, dialog and a storyline. Nick did not return to those niceties until switching to action and horror films over a decade later, also with underwhelming results.

The narrator is the devil, complaining that despite his overwhelming success in creating sinners to stock Hell, he has failed to corrupt one Herman Rose, played by burlesque comic Hermie Rose. Rose is a prude, a one-man San Francisco crusader against filth, not just in movies, live shows or girly magazines but in department window displays of lingerie, newspaper ads for brassieres, you name it.

We see him doing unfunny slapstick, trying to catch imaginary butterflies in the park, attending dirty shows, an "art" studio to photograph models, and movies (including a theater advertising NUDES ON CREDIT as well as NUDE LAS VEGAS and the unknown CHRISTINE KEELER GOES NUDIST) where he can get disgusted, and blacking out any offending photos he sees on display. His clowning is relentlessly asinine and ultimately tedious, yet Nick brought him back for two more films, NYMPHO and CANDY'S LUSTFUL NATURE, neither of which has made it to video yet for perusal by us masochistic Nick fans.

The girls in color look like Starlite loops, one even having telltale "holes" perforated in the film as if indicating a reel end, but Nick with a straight face maintains he shot them specifically for this film. The devil appears in a cheap outfit with horns, a couple rungs down from what Ricky's might sell these days for Halloween, and succeeds in corrupting Rose, mainly by turning the guy into a drunk. Both of them exit through a door in the sidewalk, used to make deliveries to stores.

Distributor Media Blasters/Guilty Pleasures, part of the NJ empire known as Seduction/After Hours Cinema, has the gall to trumpet this DVD with stern warnings like "Contains Sexually Explicit Material". The topless shots are barely worth an R rating, but this sort of fraudulent come-on would probably warm the heart of Nick's late, great dad, a pioneer in roadshow exploitation.

Bizarre!!! when homicide became the catalyst of a love comedy

This is actually a pretty good movie, in a bizarre way. It is a mixture of love, homicide and comedy. Almost all Korean movies would fill in some comedy elements, and by twisting a love story with a few cases of homicide have had this movie to be nearly perfect. Why they wanted to add killings in this film, well, my guess is that people love watching killings becuze killing sells.

If you enjoy the experience of being able to laugh and be touched here and there during a movie, then this one is surely what you are looking for. I like the way this movie is presented. There are no cops involved, and all killings are seemed to be the out of choice action. You won't feel sorry about the people got killed. I even tried to understand how the people feel in the film and what I would do if I was them. It makes me think a lot, while not making me bored.

The film begins with an almost-40-year-old college male lecturer, who never got a shot to have a date with woman,now consulting his psychotherapist for help with this situation.

As he keeps asking for a change of his being-alone-makes- feel-ALONE life, god let him met a girl who just moves in downstairs in the same condo he lives. And with the help of his friend, he asked (not really by him) her for a date, and surprisingly she set it a deal. Then story follows with their development of love, until a stranger male is appearing naked in her home. Anything followed became out of control as she's true identity is gradually uncovered as the story goes by.

The actor and actress left me a stunning impression. They really put something together that gives a burst of mojo into the movie, especially the actress. She is not the type of perfectly good-looking female Korean star with 'beauty-full' face(she's obviously stepping into her mid-age), but what she had interpret through the camera lit up something in my heart

that shocked me more heavily than some of the other Korean pretty-face-actresses could do, even making me obsessed with her. Leading male character is also played by a highly professional skilled actor who profoundly demonstrated the creepy sense of the character in the movie. I laughed a lot during his love chasing scenes (and the scene in which he wears armor to have a chat with his girl, being afraid of that she might stab him, made me fall off my chair). Trust me, there are plenty of funny scenes in this movie.

Perhaps I have to say this film is kind of Asian style that only Asians may have a thorough understanding of what is going on out there. I'm not saying that non-Asians are not able to understand the movie, but rather that not many of them can be so. Anyway, for anyone who is tired of hollyMOOD's special effect 'mustardpiece', and enjoy the experience of a light-touching and refreshing love comedy, I encourage them to give it a go.

My grading: 8/10

HK Neo Reviews: Bet to Basic

Borderline fun...

Just when I though it would be safe to say that there won't be a Kung Fu Mahjong 3, in just a few months into 2006 – it comes in the form of Bet to Basic. However the good news is that it is delivered without Wong Jing and is a huge par better than Kung Fu Mahjong 2, but the bad news is that it is worst than the original. While this isn't exactly part of the Kung Fu Mahjong series, but the premises is immensely similar and the actors involved is the much overused – Yuen Wah. Sure, the presence of beauty chick – Rain Lee, the dumb founded look of Jordan Chan and the comic presence of Eric Kot are all welcoming, but ultimately Bet to Basic is only borderline entertaining and the feeling of constant rehash of previous crap keep gashing back into my head.

The movie goes like this: A young mahjong player wants to quit the mahjong championship but his talent has already caught the attention of an evil competitor...

Jordan Chan has always been one of the coolest actors around, but recently he has been starring in a string of roles that picture him as somewhat dumb founded. Sure it shows him to be a pretty versatile actor, but these kinds of silly roles will certainly do his award winning chances more harm than good. While it was refreshing to see him act dumb for a first time, but with a few years on it is becoming a cliché. Rain Lee is one heck of an actress, while not processing much talent; she is always a pleasant experience to watch. Sure this is yet another role that she can not show off any potential, but like Stolen Love, it reinforces her beauty in a manner that Neo likes it. While Eric Kot continues to show funny comic timing, Yuen Wah has now become one of the most annoying sidekicks in recent memories.

Sometimes it is surprising to witness a movie that offer nothing new or refreshing can still be borderline fun to watch. Bet to Basic, perhaps benefiting from Wong Jing absence, or maybe Neo's obvious bias factor of Rain Lee. Whatever the case is, this movie isn't good and certainly isn't entirely crap, but at its best can only be described as borderline fun. Review :

A little too slow

This was one of our choices to see at Sundance this year, as it sounded like a charming story. It was a disappointment to us. The story moved quite slowly and meandered into strange dream sequences that were not far enough removed from the main character's real life to differentiate them from it. The main character was never quite sympathetic enough for me to care what happened to him, so this was a film that had me checking my watch quite often. It's only 90 minutes or so long, but it felt much, much longer. This was not one I would recommend.

An offbeat hilarious comedy with a quirky twist on the vampire tale set in modern day corporate America. Employees of Berm-Tech Industries, Inc. have kept the family secret for a long time. Funny flick!

Saw it at the Dallas Film Festival where the whole audience laughed their butts off. It was one of those movies I'll need to see twice to catch the jokes I missed. Lots of great visual humor, too. Jeeves the stuffed dog and the cripple poster were so tasteless but so funny. I probably didn't need to see that dude with the thong, but even that was hilarious. I loved Hammand and Burns, truly outstanding performances. Judd Nelson was good and nerdy. I agree with others who said Dave Foley was wasted in the part he played, but he was still very solid in a more dramatic part. And finally Mewes didn't just play Mewes. Amy Davidson is cute as a button as the new human employee. I didn't recognize Robert Wagner (with a beard as President Garfield) until he spoke. Then I knew.

I really dug all the backstory parts explaining how the company came to be. I read a complaint here saying that the flashbacks looked like a power point project. Dude, it was SUPPOSED to be a power point project! You have to stick around until the end of the movie to discover why.

I recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys a good laugh and can appreciate a great tasteless joke.
